1. What are Public Nights?

Public Nights at the James C. Veen Observatory are specific times during the year when we open the facilities to the public at large. We provide tours of the facilities and observations through the telescopes.

2. When are Public Nights?

Public Nights are held on the second and last Saturday's of the month, providing the sky is clear, beginning at the end of April and running through October. The observatory is closed to the public, November to the start of the new season in April.

3. What time are the Public Nights held?

The times for Public Nights are from 8:30 pm until 11:30 pm in the months of August, September, and October. In the months of April through July, the times are 9:00 pm until 12:00 am. This is due to the fact that the sun does not set until very late during those months.

4. Is there an admission fee for Public Nights?

The GRAAA charges a small admissions fee, which is as follows:

Adults: $3.00
Children (5 - 17) $2.00
Children (Under 5)  Free

5. What will I see?

In addition to tours of the facilities, there is an audio-visual presentation about the Association and the Observatory.

Depending on the month and time of the year, and what is above the horizon, you will observe a variety of objects through the telescopes, including the moon, the planets of the solar system, galaxies, nebulas, and star clusters.

6. How do I get to the James C. Veen Observatory?

Directions to the Veen Observatory can be found via a map on this website. There will be signs posted on the main road to the Observatory that will point to the parking area.

There is a parking lot at the bottom of the hill, and you will be directed to park in the lower lot. There is an approximately 1/4 mile walk up the road to the observatory.

There are several spaces at the top of the hill for the elderly and the handicapped. Please see a parking attendant if you are unable to walk up the road.

Although the Observatory road is lighted for Public nights, it is suggested you bring a flashlight.

7. Do I need to bring anything?

A flashlight is suggested, as it is kept as dark as possible on the observatory grounds. Dark skies and surroundings are the only way to observe and appreciate the wonders of the Universe. If you have binoculars, bring them.

Some type of insect repellent is also suggested. The Observatory is located in a wooded area. A jacket might also be optional.

8. Miscellaneous

Even thought the GRAAA owns and operates the Veen Observatory, it is on private property. We please ask parents to watch their children. It is dark at the observatory, and any running or horseplay could result in unforeseen injuries.

There is a restroom available on the premises, and water for those individuals needing it.
